Hi everyone, and welcome to EDUC522.
My name is Lisa Rodriguez and I will be your professor the Summer 2015 term. I have been with APU since 2013 and love teaching Masters students! I am really looking forward to working with you in the upcoming course, Learning in the 21st Century.
Our first class is Tuesday, June 16, 4:45 pm in Adobe Connect - https://apu-celt.adobeconnect.com/lrodriguez/. We will meet once a week (Tuesdays) for the first three weeks of class, and then twice a week (Tuesdays/Thursdays) for the last three weeks. Dr. Jennifer Courduff will be teaching a few of the classes when I'm out of town in July. The syllabus for our class is attached.
All our class meetings will be online because I live in Oregon, and that's just too long of a commute! :-)
It's imperative that you attend every session for the entire class session, usually 2-1/2 to 3 hours.
Since this is a course on learning through multiple means, you will participate in a variety of learning activities (including a field trip!). There are a few things that need to be done on your side of the wireless before class on the 16th.
1. SAKAI - this is where discussion postings and assignment uploads will take place.
2. Adobe Connect: To join our class meeting, click this link:

3. Google Plus and Skype: With technology, it's always good to have a backup plan--it's wonderful, but often glitchy. Also, during one of our class sessions you will break out into small groups. Google Hangouts and Skype are two video conferencing tools that you should have ready. You need a Google Plus account in order to participate in Google Hangouts. If you haven't already used Google Hangouts, please set that up before our first class meeting. It's free and pretty easy. You should create an EDUC522 Circle and add me to it. The account I'm using is my APU account and shows a picture of me wearing a gray suit, with my hands on my hips, and a speech bubble that says "Always refer to the rubric!" Here are step by step instructions if you need them. Let me know if you have any problems.
4. Supplies: Make sure to have your textbooks, laptop, and iPad during every class meeting.
5. EDUC522 Website - http://21stcteachingeduc522.weebly.com
This is our class website where all content is presented. We'll use SAKAI only for discussion postings and assignment uploads. Your grades will be in Sakai.
This is a great course, and very intense. You'll need to have your textbooks for the first night of class. You can purchase the texts at the APU bookstore or through Amazon.com.
The required texts are:
1. McKenzie, W. (2005). Multiple Intelligences and Instructional Technology (2nd ed.). Eugene, Oregon: International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
2. Silver, H. F., Strong, R. W., & Pini, M. J. (2000). So Each May Learn. Alexandria, VA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. (ISBN 0-87120-387-1)
There are two optional texts I encourage my students to purchase and read:
1. Gardner, H. (2006). Changing minds the art and science of changing our own and other people's minds. Boston, Mass: Harvard Business School Press.
2. Gardner, H. (2006). Five minds for the future. Boston, Mass: Harvard Business School Press. This one is available through the iBook store if you want to read it on an iPad.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, or if you just want to say hello! If you don't hear from me within 24 hours, I didn't get your message - feel free to send it again, or better yet, text me at 971-221-5246. I am looking forward to meeting you all, working with you, and being part of your journey.
P.S. Please make sure to always use your APU email address for all correspondence for this class.
See you (virtually) Tuesday :-)
